When it’s time to pack for a move, you’ll need to know what’s non-allowable. Some items just aren’t appropriate because they are hazardous. Many of these items are obviously bad choices, so you would probably avoid packing them anyway! However, others aren’t quite as obvious.
With this in mind, we’d like to help you prepare for your move by giving you access to a practical and convenient “non-allowable” checklist. It will take the guesswork out of getting ready to move! This checklist is most appropriate for long-distance moves. However, it’s a good reference for moves of all distances.
It’s important to avoid packing items which are perishable. For example, refrigerated foods, frozen foods, produce and plants are perishable. If a move is shorter in distance, such as one hundred and fifty miles or less, we will make an exception and transport your perishables, provided that we receive them within twenty-four hours of loading the moving truck.
If you want us to make an exception during your shorter move, you’ll need to let our team know. Also, you’ll need to pack up perishables properly.
Some household items are fine to use at home, but not so good in terms of being safe for transport. We don’t let customers pack them in order to protect the safety of our drivers, as well as the safety of others on the road. Examples of hazardous items which aren’t allowable include toxic substances, gases which are flammable and explosives.
It’s smart to separate these items from all of the rest while you’re preparing to pack. Then, you’ll be less likely to pack them by mistake. These types of items are usually stored in home garages and/or with cleaning supplies for the home.

Streamline Your Belongings During Week Five
At five weeks, you’re approaching the one month mark and moving day is fast becoming a reality. This is a great time to sort your possessions and donate or sell what you don’t need. You may also decide to throw out some old stuff at this point.
To get the ball rolling, walk from room to room and decide what should come along with you and what should stay behind. Sometimes, it’s easier to get rid of stuff than it is to pack it, especially if you don’t like it and/or don’t use it. Most of us are pack rats to some extent and getting over the tendency to hoard things that really don’t add value to our lives can be liberating.
Next, sort like the people on HGTV shows do! This means making three piles. One should be the “resale” pile, one should be the “trash” pile and one should be the “donation” pile. Some people throw a garage sale with the contents of the “donation” pile instead of actually donating it. In general, the resale pile will have the highest value, followed by the donation pile. The “trash” pile won’t have much value at all.
To manage the “trash” pile, think about how to recycle. What will you do with certain items which are harder to dispose of, such as electronics? It’s possible to recycle certain items and get paid for it, and this may be something that you want to look into. Anything which you plan to dispose of which is hazardous or electronic should be thrown out/recycled in a way which is safe and eco-conscious.
When it comes to donations, think about which charity you would like to help. One option is to bulk-bag items for donation and then deliver them to a local charity thrift shop which is aligned with your values. If you donate, make a point of accessing a receipt, as you should be able to write off your donation on your next tax return.

What To Do at the Four Week Point
Now, you’re hitting one month before moving day! It’s all getting closer! To make the most of this phase, be sure to check and see if any plans have changed. For example, have you decided to take less or more belongings than originally anticipated? Have you decided to shift your moving date? If there are changes, you should alert your moving coordinator ASAP.
In most cases, our moving company will be able to accommodate these changes with no problem. However, we need to know and letting your rep know at four weeks will boost your chances of accessing smooth and seamless adjustments.
At the four-week point, we also recommend checking in with your moving coordinator, even if you don’t need to make changes. Make sure that this moving company rep has your destination address on file, as well as all of your phone numbers.
As well, look at your point of origin-to-destination planning. Are there going to be any extra stops for the purpose of picking up or delivering items to non-main locations? Also, consider pets if you have them and how these beloved animals will be transported for the move. If you have kids or other family who will be moving with you, you’ll also need to think about how everyone is going to get from Point A to Point B (if you don’t already have a plan in place).
If you’re flying and/or planning to stay in a hotel, confirm flight plans and hotel reservations. Think about how you’ll spend time during your first evening in your new residence. It’s smart to set aside items which may need to be used during the first night in a new place and/or during travel to the new place.
The next step is actually packing up your stuff! It’s the right time to get started. If you’re doing it yourself, you should begin by packing up things that aren’t used as much, including books and clothes which are meant for the non-current season. When you plan ahead and start packing early, the whole process will be less daunting. Pack with care in order to protect items. You’ll find expert packing advice at this website!
This is the right time to get textiles ready for moves. For example, you may wish to get your curtains cleaned and have your area rugs shampooed. When they are picked up from the cleaners, just keep them in the wrapping they came in. This way, they’ll stay pristine during the trip. We don’t recommend having furniture with upholstery cleaned prior to a move. Moisture may remain on the upholstery and this may trigger the formation of mold while the furniture is being stored.
Next, think about how to pack items which are valuable and/or breakable. Precious and fragile items need more care and attention. Look for packing tips on how to baby these special items before a move.
Also, if you need appraisals for any pricey collections, artwork or antiques, the three week mark is a good time to get them. In addition, you should know that treating antiques made from wood with polish, wax or oil before you move isn’t a wise decision. It’s better to treat them afterwards. Some products which are designed to care for wood do soften wood and this leaves it more susceptible to damage during moving.
Another tip is to get your appliances prepared. You may do so by booking an appointment with an expert who prepares major appliances for moves. Week Two Advice from Our Moving Experts
When it’s two weeks from moving day, you should do a bit more “pet planning” to make sure that your pets will have the care that they need as you transition from place to place. As well, you should focus on items which might be overlooked without a formal, “two week plan”.
To begin, think about how you’ll move the pet. We touched on this earlier. However, this is the time to reconfirm your plans. For example, will your pet need to be boarded or will it be left with buddies? After you take care of reconfirmation, we think that taking your pet to the vet will be smart. Your vet will be able to make sure that your pet has the right health documents and vaccinations. Basically, if you’re moving out of state, the pet will need health certificates and inoculations which fit the laws of the state that you’re moving to!
Another task to complete during this phase is picking up stuff which was out for servicing. Think about any items that you’ve taken in for cleaning, for repairs, for alterations or for other types of servicing. Make sure that you get them back or they may be left behind. Also, remove stuff from lockers if anything is stored in them. Gym and school lockers are just two examples. The two week mark is also a good time to empty the contents of safe deposit boxes. Also, if you have a wall safe or hidden spot at home, where you keep valuables, take them out and pack them up. Don’t forget about them!
At this point in time, you should also return any stuff that you’ve borrowed. As well, make a point of returning books to the library or school, or both.

Week One is About Finishing Touches
You’ll finally made it to one week before moving. You’ve worked hard and followed all of our expert moving tips, so you should take moment to sit back, relax and pat yourself on the back! By doing the preparations which we’ve outlined here, you will be primed to enjoy a moving day which goes off without a hitch. All that’s left to do during the final seven days is to take care of the finishing touches!
First, you should get your appliances ready. This usually means being there when a service rep for your appliance brand comes to prepare your appliances for transport. Next, check in with your moving coordinator. We know this tip comes up again and again but it’s important. Good communication is the key to minimizing the risk of moving day snafus! Make sure you and the moving company are on the same page. All details should be understood and shared. Lastly, finish your packing. Make sure that all of your items are ready to go.
Once you’ve finished packing, double-check to ensure that no non-allowables are packed for transport.
What to Do the Day Before
When moving day is just a single day away, let your movers know which items are particularly fragile, as they will need special care. Anything which is too fragile to put into the moving van or truck should be clearly marked. Use a permanent marker so there are no misunderstandings. Put these items away from things which do need to be moved.
If you want certain items loaded last, mark them with your permanent marker. Also, label boxes that you want unloaded first when they arrive at your new residence or place of business. Usually, these are valuables, such as electronics. Move these items away from the others.
Next, unplug items which are electronic. It’s best to unplug them a full twenty-four hours before the move. This will ensure that they are at the correct temperature when they are moved. This is room temperature. Don’t forget to unplug your computers and A/V equipment.
We also think that it’s smart to connect with your utility company on the day before the move. Make sure that services will be turned on before you move in. Also, come up with a furniture placement plan. This will help our moving technicians to put everything in the right places.
If your new home needs cleaning, it’s wise to take care of it the day before the move. It will become the perfect fresh and blank canvas for your belongings. As well, get money ready to pay the driver who will be operating the moving van or truck. There are different payment options available. Ask your moving coordinator about the choices that you will have and then prepare to pay via your preferred method.
Another smart tip is to have a couple of people present in the new residence on the day that you move in. One of the people should be in charge of the inventory, while the other should let the movers know where items should be placed. Have the inventory person check off items as they come out of the truck or van. If something is missing, let the moving coordinator know immediately.
If you need babysitting on moving day, think about arranging it, if you haven’t already. Also, think about what you’ll do with your pets during the move.
What To Do on Moving Day

It doubles as a shipment receipt. Keep it somewhere safe. All of your moving documents should be protected.
Before your moving truck or van operator departs, go over the new address details with him or her. Also, make sure that your driver knows your current contact details. Then, do one last check of the property. During this ultra-final check, make sure that water, air conditioning and lights are turned off and that the furnace is turned off. Also, make sure that doors and windows are locked and closed. Also, think about your house keys. Are you planning on leaving them in a specific place? If so, take care of that.
Tips for Your Delivery Day
On the day that items are scheduled to be delivered, plan to be around. If you can’t be, ask someone that you trust to take delivery for you and to pay charges if they need to be paid. Also, be available to take emails and calls. On delivery day, your driver should connect with you via telephone. He or she may drop by if it’s not possible to reach you by phone. If no one is there when the driver arrives, the driver will wait a couple of hours. If you need additional time, ask for it.
Once items arrive, check them to make sure that everything is there. If you notice damage or other problems, make a note of it. Put the note on the inventory form. When you sign the inventory, you’ll be acknowledging receipt (and condition) of the items.
The movers will put the furniture in your new residence according to your instructions, including bed setup and rug lay-down. Extra unpacking services, such as mattress unpacking and appliance installation, should be arranged with the moving company in advance. Before you ask for these services during delivery day, you should talk with your moving rep and make sure that they are included. If they aren’t, you should be able to get them for an extra fee.
If you can, make sure to have a floor plan on hand, which helps movers to know where the various pieces of furniture should be placed.
How to Settle In After the Move
Once you’ve moved in, visit the local post office. Check and see if you’ve gotten any new mail which is being held in your name. As well, if applicable, go and get a driver’s license and have your auto(s) registered. Another tip is to find a local lawyer. This type of attorney will be able to look over laws which differ from the laws in your prior location. Inquire about insurance, taxes, investments and wills.

Will I Be Protected Against Losses and Damage While My Items are in Transit?
You will be protected. However, the level of protection that you access and how much it costs will depend upon the degree of valuation coverage that you choose. Basically, you’ll get the level of protection that you are granted via your preferred valuation option. So, it’s important to select a valuation option which gives you peace of mind. Valuation may be simply defined as the liability that the moving company has. Sometimes, homeowners are covered for moving via their homeowner’s insurance policies. If you’re thinking about insurance, be sure and check with your insurance company. You may be pleasantly surprised to find out that you already have insurance coverage.
Now that we’ve defined valuation, which isn’t insurance, let’s talk about insurance in a bit more depth. You’ll be given a choice of Released Value or Full Maximum Value Protection.
Released Value is cheaper. In fact, it’s included at no extra charge. While it doesn’t cost anything, it offers less protection than the other option, which does cost money. When you go for Released Value, you’ll get basic protection and this usually isn’t enough for most moves. With Released Protection, you’ll access sixty cents per pound, per article, if damage or loss occurs during a move. That equates to forty-five dollars for a piece of furniture which weighs in at seventy-five pounds.
If you choose Released Value coverage, you will need to add your initials to a bill of lading. If you have existing insurance in place, which covers items for full value, Released Value coverage may be considered to be supplemental.
Full Maximum Value Protection is very comprehensive. When you choose to pay for it, you’ll get plenty of protection. If items are lost, destroyed or damaged, they’ll be replaced with similar items or repaired. When it’s appropriate, cash settlements will be offered based on current market values of items, no matter how old the items are. Depreciation doesn’t factor in and this is to your benefit.

What Is a Non-binding Estimate?

What Is An Order for Service?
An order of service is something that a moving company has to prepare ahead of transporting a shipment.
